The origin story of Glass Can Cups

Glass can cups, also known as canning jar cups, have their roots in the practice of home canning. Home canning is a method of preserving food by sealing it in glass jars or cans and subjecting it to high heat to kill bacteria and prevent spoilage.

Canning jars were first patented in the 1850s, and they quickly became popular among home cooks as a way to preserve fruits, vegetables, and other perishable foods. In the early days, canning jars had a threaded neck that was designed to hold a metal lid and ring, which could be tightened down to create an airtight seal.

Over time, canning jars evolved to include a variety of sizes and styles, including the iconic Ball Mason jar, which was first introduced in 1884. These jars were made of clear glass, which made it easy to see the contents inside, and they had a wide mouth that made them easy to fill and clean.

In the 2000s, companies began producing canning jar lids that included a hole for a straw, effectively turning the jars into drinking glasses. These lids were typically made of metal, which could sometimes leave a metallic taste in the drink, and they were not very durable.

Glass can cups, which are made of tempered glass and feature a screw-on lid with a straw hole, were introduced as a more durable and reusable alternative to metal canning jar lids. Today, they are a popular choice for serving drinks at outdoor events, picnics, and parties, as well as for everyday use in the home.
